Please practice Prodigy math at home if there is time.

Due to the short weeks, there will not be any home reading for 2 weeks. I will hand it back out on February 21. I will continue to check student progress on Raz Kids and Prodigy.

Inquiry:

Students completed their plasticine artwork related to their favourite right of a child writing. They learned about the different techniques used by Barbara Reid during our artist study. We discussed Viola Desmond and how she made a difference for Canadians. AMA where we can find her picture. In learning about child activists who made a difference, we explored Iqbal, Malala, Ryan and Hannah. AMA who these children are/were and how their story made a difference in the world.

Math:

AMA my mental math strategy for subtraction (compensation). How do I think I did on the subtraction assessment check?

Language Arts:

We continued to use our editing skills when writing and typing our persuasive writing paragraphs. AMA how I used a rubric to enhance my writing.

Subtraction Check

Tomorrow we will be doing a short and quick subtraction assessment check. Please review strategies that are on this blog. It is a check to see how students are understanding the strategies they have learned so far.

Math:

This week we continued to use number lines to solve 3 digit subtraction questions.
This strategy will help students with building their mental math skills. Other strategies we have learned in class are:
1. Draw regrouping blocks
2. Number line
3. Vertical subtraction
4. Break apart (decomposition)
5. Hundred, Tens, Ones chart
6. Thousands chart

Language Arts:

We continued to develop our persuasive writing through the use of strong adjectives. We also reviewed the sounds "ch, ou, th, ir, er, ur, ou, ow and sh." AMA what inferring means.

Inquiry:

We took our jot notes and began writing our persuasive paragraphs. We will continue this next week. During read aloud we are learning about the life of a child activist named Malala. AMA how her right to education and freedom was taken away.

Art:

This week we focused the artist books and techniques of Barbara Reid. We practiced using plasticine to make clouds, background, grass and people.

Health:

We looked at the words inspiration and goal setting when discussing the life and positive things Kobe Bryant and Malala did and have achieved.

Happy Chinese New Year to those who are celebrating!

Students are welcome to bring in Valentines on February 12th. I will post the names of the students in the class next week. Including the teacher, there are 24 students in this class.

Home Reading was sent home today and is due next Thursday. Next Friday, January 31st is a PD day so no school for children!

Language Arts:

Students picked their favourite right of a child to begin their persuasive writing activity. AMA my favourite right and reasons for its importance.

Inquiry:

Students continued to explore the various responsibilities that accompany the different rights of a child. Below is a picture of an activity students worked on. Students also began thinking about their art piece for inquiry relating to the rights of a child. AMA my drawing.

Math:

Students used 1000's charts and number lines to solve 3 digit subtraction questions and then used vertical subtraction to check their work. Below are some pictures of the types of questions:

Due to a poor turn out for handing in homework this week, I did not give back folders. I will send home reading on Friday to be brought back on Thursday January 30th.

It has been a COLD week and students still have been happy to come to school!

Math
Students began exploring 2 and 3 digit subtraction using place value mats and base 10 blocks. A really good link to practice is http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/memg/division01/base%20ten%20blocks/index.html
This shows the regrouping/borrowing. Please see the pictures below to see the different strategies students learned.




Language Arts
We started to explore persuasive writing more this week. As a class, we composed a persuasive piece of writing that included introduction, reason1, example 1, reason 2, example 2, reason 3, example 3 and a conclusion.

When reading, students focused on the following letters sounds: th, ar, sh, er, ir, ur, ow, ou




Inquiry
Students learned that children all over the world have rights but with these rights come responsibilities. See the example in the picture below.
